Karen Shultz.jpgDear friends of Komen Austin,

As we begin a new year, many of us are making resolutions to become more fit and heatlhy. Named one of the fittest cities in the U.S., Austin is the prime place to perfect that healthy lifestyle, which is key in the fight against breast cancer.

Our findings from the most recent Komen Austin Community Profile show that female breast cancer incidence, late stage discovery, and mortality rates are on the rise in the Greater Austin area. Surprising given our view as of one of the healthiest cities in America.

Komen Austin resolves to work diligently to change these statistics and to continue on our quest to save lives locally and fight breast cancer globally.

Wishing you a heatlhy and prosperous 2016!

 With warmest regards,

Komen Austin Community Profile

Have you ever wondered how Komen Austin determines where to concentrate the Affiliate's funding efforts?  Our community’s needs and funding focuses are assessed and prioritized by completing a Community Profile.

The Community Profile is a thorough assessment of breast health services that is done every five years in Komen Austin’s five county service area, which encompasses 4,284 square miles in the Austin area. The profile identifies gaps in services and serves as a roadmap to identify future funding focuses in Bastrop, Caldwell, Hays, Travis and Williamson counties.

You can read the Profile in its entirety here.

Screening Update

Dr. Judy Salerno raises concern over new breast cancer screening recommendations

Last week, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) issued new breast cancer screening recommendations that raise the age for routine mammograms.

Dr. Judy Salerno, Susan G. Komen President and CEO, responded by issuing a statement that said, "...women and their doctors should be the final decision-makers when it comes to breast cancerscreening, and that screening tests, if recommended by a healthcare provider, should becovered by insurers and government regardless of a woman’s age."

You can read the full statement here.
